Powder Brows

What are “Powder Brows?"

Also referred to as ombre brows, ombre powder brows, or microshading. “Ombre” means lighter and airy fronts that gradually get darker to the tail. “Powder” refers to the soft makeup powder look that this style imitates. Ombre powder brows can be customized to appear natural to more saturated and makeup-like depending on your skin, hair flow, and preference. The initial session focuses on creating the foundation of your brows. A 6 to 8 week perfecting session may be needed as this technique usually takes two sessions to get to the desired results. In some cases even a second perfecting is needed. Please note that there is a separate price for perfecting sessions.

How does it differ from “Microblading?”

Microblading (while not offered at Si Jolie Studio) is a technique best preformed on normal to dry skin types using a handheld tool with a blade at its end. Microblading artists will use this blade to create small incisions to create hair-like strokes. Powder Brows, however is created by a tattoo pen and needle cartridge, shading back and forth to create a soft makeup look. Powder brows is suitable for all skin types and is less invasive than microblading.

Frequently asked questions

  • Surprisingly, there are a variety of reasons that may prevent you from being a good candidate for permanent makeup. It is important to note we are not medical professionals, so if you have any questions on whether or not your medication or medical condition interferes with you getting a tattoo, it is best to discuss that with your doctor before moving forward. Your doctor will need to email you a note to receive PMU if you have any of the following conditions in this list. If that is the case, you must let your artist know when booking and email the original note.

Please visit our list of contraindications here.

  • Everyone has a different level of sensitivity. We can tell you from experience that most clients will fall asleep, or find the first pass just a bit uncomfortable. However, there are a few specific things that typically increase pain and sensitivity:

Being on, about to start or just ending your menstrual cycle. It is advised to schedule your PMU appointments around this.

Fibromyalgia. It is advised to speak with your doctor and your artist to determine whether this will cause undue sensitivity to procedures.

Being a frequent smoker or sunbather. This may cause the local anesthetics used during the treatment to not last as long.

A topical anesthetic will be applied after a pass of shading. Ultra Duration Liquid Topical Anesthetic is used at our studio. It contains 4% Lidocaine, 2% Tetracaine and .05% Epinephrine

  • The longevity of your brow tattoo will be dependent on your artist’s technique and the type of pigment used. This will be determined during your consultation.

Clients that prefer to go with a softer look, lighter color shade or who do not properly follow brow care may find that their brows fade faster and may require more touch ups.

It will also depend on your compliance to aftercare, your medication, supplements, health conditions, dieting and skin conditions (i.e., oily, big pores, sun-damaged, skin elasticity, and natural undertone).

It will last as long as it’s maintained. Untouched, the ink can last years and may even be permanent. However, it will typically fade and begin to look patchy. On average we see clients around 2-3 years after their initial visits.

  • Eyebrow tattooing is a 2-step treatment, consisting of an initial procedure (approx. 3 hours) and then a perfecting touch up 6 to 8 weeks later (approx. 2 hours.) Here is the agenda for the day of your session.

    1. Photos and videos will be taken for insurance purposes and content

    2. We’ll draw the brow design (also known as shaping or mapping) in pencil so you get an idea of shape and form. This part of the session can sometimes take the longest.

    3. Once we have agreed on a final shape (ultimately it is your decision –but we will always voice our opinion on what we think suits you aesthetically) we will clean the hairs outside of the outline, then decide on the color

    4. Tattooing will then begin. A topical anesthetic will be used after the first pass, as our numbing works best on broken skin

    5. Lastly, we will go over aftercare with you, take more photos and videos, schedule you for your 6 to 8 week perfecting session, then finally check you out!

Your perfecting and returning touch ups will be similar, though sessions are usually shorter

  • We customize a blend of several colors to achieve a shade that best suits the client. We also choose your pigment based on your natural brow hair, skin tone and undertone. This way, we can match the pigment to the desired HEALED RESULT, which emerges after the scabs naturally fall off and the skin naturally and gently exfoliates itself to reveal the new brow. You may want to consider coming in with your brows filled if you are particular about the color. ALL clients who have the procedure done will be conscious they have brows that are very obvious; please bear in mind, the skin has been broken to allow the pigment to settle and healing has yet to take place. Clients who are used to having sparse brows for a long time, can find the change drastic or startling. We advise these clients to fill in their brows some time before their appointment so they can get used to having a brow!

  • Within a week or so after the treatment, the color will fade as your body absorbs some pigment and pushes some out. Over the next 4-8 weeks, this fading can continue to reduce pigment as much as 40%. You may get some patchiness of color and some spots where pigment did not take.

This is why we may do at least one perfecting session 6 to 8 weeks after the initial service. This will let your artist know how your body heals and accepts the pigment, and we will be able to perfect your service. Some clients will need more than one perfecting session. The time before the perfecting session is an ideal time for you to reflect on your shape and color. At the perfecting session, any changes you would like to make are discussed.

  • Everyone comes back at different times. Powder brows generally last up to 3 years. They can even last longer. Indicators for coming back for a touch up may include: brows being 60% faded after your last session, not as defined, patchy or uneven, ashy in color or in need of warming up, or if brows require filling in on a daily basis again.

For the integrity of your skin and to prevent your brows from looking overly saturated and “fake,” please wait for your brows to be very faded to make more room for pigment. Before scheduling a touch up please be sure to get approved by texting in a clear photo of your brows to (425)780-5127

  • This varies depending on how faded the previous work is and what your current shape looks like. Not all work can be corrected especially if your skin is oversaturated with pigment. You will be require to send in photos for examination. Any work done by another artist (no matter how faded) is considered a correction. There is separate pricing for correction work as it requires more work to reshape and color correct your old work. Removal may also be suggested before you get correction.

  • Healing time for powder brows varies depending on the person. Usually, it takes about a week to 14 days for the epithelial crust to form and slough off. Your skin will take 2 to 4 more weeks to heal fully, even though they’ll appear healed after scabs come off. Then, the pigment takes some time to settle into the skin. This is why we wait 6-8 weeks before doing the perfecting session. Please visit this link for in depth aftercare as well as what to expect after your appointment

  • You are advised to keep the skin clean. That means no swimming, sweating or otherwise getting the area wet; no tanning or prolonged sun exposure. No picking, peeling, scratching or rubbing the tattoo–this may result in a loss of color and scarring. You can still wash your hair and face; once they’re healed up, you treat them as your own. For in-depth aftercare please visit this link

  • For clients who frequently fill in their brows or wear full face makeup, you may find yourselves still filling in your brows even after your sessions. Your brow tattoo lives beneath your skin. Overtime it is normal for your permanent makeup to look duller because of that reason, and you may want to make it more vibrant by putting on some brow makeup

  • No. There’s no downtime associated with the treatment. Redness and swelling should dissipate within an hour. Your brows will appear darker initially, but not so dark that you will be prevented from your activities of daily living. We do ask that you schedule your appointment accordingly so that there’s no rush

  • Unfortunately, we cannot. How the skin will react is different for everyone and many factors are to be taken into consideration. Skin type, age, scarring, diet, stress levels, facial products used, etc., all play a key role in how the pigment will hold, which is why it is important to know that more than one touch up may be required. We can guarantee that your face is important to us and that we will act in accordance with our experience and expertise to give you our absolute best. We can guarantee that we will strive to make you gratified and content every time. But there are no guarantees in this industry. Please think long and hard before you decide to go for it.

  • No. Every attempt is made to retain all natural hair and integrate it into the design of the permanent eyebrows. In some cases where shaping of the natural brow is required, a few hairs here and there may need to be removed to create a clean and aesthetically pleasing result. If you decide to clean up your brows before your session, please be sure it is 3 days before.

  • Because ink is deposited in the very upper layer of skin (dermis) during Powder Brow, it does allow some flexibility for color or shape change to some extent. This is why we spend a lot of time shaping and working with you to ensure that you are satisfied with the proposed shape prior to actually implanting pigment. We will allow you to have as much control over the procedure as possible, so there’s little room for error. If you do not like the decision you made, the touch-up can be cancelled and the pigmented area naturally fades away over time. If you aren’t 100% sure you would benefit from this procedure, please opt for a more temporary option
